Do you sometimes get a swollen, itchy, red eyelid for “no reason”? That is contact dermatitis. Contact dermatitis is just what it sounds like. Something you touched or were exposed to got on the skin around your eyelid and caused an allergic reaction.
Contact dermatitis is an allergy, but unlike “typical” IgG and IgM related allergies which show up on allergy testing, this is an IgE mediated allergy which can only be detected by eliminating the irritant and stopping the reaction.
I have had patients react to their eyeglasses, laundry detergent, moisturizer, perfume, flowers and more. Sometimes we never figure out the reason.
